Celebrating Marginalized Communities Respectfully in the Workplace

DEI

As a part of your brand’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, it is important to be more inclusive and accommodating of non-dominant holidays, observances and celebrations in the workplace throughout the calendar year. Here are three tips for being intentional and meaningful when celebrating underrepresented groups:

Center the experiences of systemically marginalized communities: Making strides in DEI demands embracing discomfort, as it means confronting established systems and acknowledging the shortcomings within an organization or team. While uncomfortable, this process is crucial for growth and shouldn't hinder progress. Simply put, despite the mixed emotions involved, it is vital to focus on the experiences of marginalized communities who have faced systemic disadvantages.

Recognize that not all holidays are necessarily happy: It's important to acknowledge that not all holidays are happy for everyone. Some individuals may have personal or cultural circumstances that make certain holidays difficult or even painful. Foster open communication and empathy, allowing employees to express their emotions and experiences surrounding holidays.

Ground the approach in research and measurement: Successful inclusion efforts are rooted in research, executed intentionally, and viewed as a continuous journey. Conducting an audit of existing measures and gathering insights across the employee experience from hiring to retiring helps shape effective strategies for fostering inclusivity and driving meaningful change.
