Getting Local: Celebrating Rochester’s Innovators This Black History Month

This month, we celebrate 100 years since Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History launched Negro History Week (1926), the foundation of today’s national Black History Month. As we celebrate, one of the most meaningful things we can do is look within our own community. By recognizing the stories and voices around us, we create lasting impact everyday - honoring the people who shape our city and strengthen the bonds that connect us. Taking time to uplift others deepens our empathy, our awareness and our shared sense of purpose.

Rochester is home to many organizations and small businesses built by Black innovators whose creativity, leadership and cultural influence leave a powerful mark. Several of these innovators are members of the House of LáLew.

Pearl’s Loves Cosmetics

Through hand-crafted bath and body products, Pearl’s Loves Cosmetics has a mission to enhance natural beauty and confidence.

With products made right here in Rochester, their selection offers inclusive self-care experiences. Exploration, innovation and care are at the heart of their product line which includes body butters, bath and shower gel, lip care and much more!

Shades Up

Shades Up offers a variety of Afrocentric, inspirational and spiritual gifts.

This cultural gift store offers products such as cushion covers, bags, water bottles and more that empower and celebrate identity. Be sure to catch them at many different events around the Rochester area.

Butter Me Up Body Care, LLC

Ka'Mari Heath took her passion to create Butter Me Up Body Care, LLC.

In the summer of 2020, Heath began to create body care products to keep herself busy. She has since expanded to a variety of handmade products - each nourishing and hydrating skin - including body butter and body oil. To ensure the best quality, each order is handmade in small batches.

Innovation is thriving in Rochester, and our local Black innovators are leading the way. This month, we honor their achievements, celebrate their contributions and amplify the stories that inspire us all.
