How Aesthetic Nurse Alyssa Simmons Is Redefining Beauty for the Black Community

DEI

By Jordan Wethington, Graduate Intern

For Alyssa Simmons, becoming an aesthetic nurse wasn’t just a career choice — it was a calling. With early interests in special effects makeup and design, she eventually found her purpose in nursing, a field that blends creativity and care. She specializes in full facial balancing and skin rejuvenation, offering natural, undetectable results that help clients feel like the best version of themselves.

“When patients are in my chair, I want them to leave looking refreshed and rejuvenated, yet no one can quite put a finger on what they’ve had done,” Simmons said.

What makes her work stand out is more than just technical skill, it’s her mission to make aesthetic care inclusive, especially for clients of color.

“Often I think our voices aren’t heard loud enough,” she said. “Creating a safe space in health care where all voices, especially Black voices, are heard and valued is so rare, it’s a priority for me.”

Her approach is grounded in confidence-building. During consultations, she asks clients what they love about themselves, not what they want to fix.

“I think it empowers them and instills confidence rather than picking out flaws,” she said.

She’s also passionate about patient education, debunking common myths about darker skin tones and aesthetic treatments, and reminding everyone that sunscreen is essential, even indoors.

Because to Alyssa Simmons, beauty isn’t just about appearance. It’s about confidence, empowerment, and the freedom to show up fully as yourself.
